On the way to a funeral, Charlie tells Alex in no uncertain terms that if the funeral director, Malcolm, offers them the cremation urn, they don’t want it. Cut to later, and Charlie is sitting in the passenger seat holding exactly that. Bickering over whose fault it is and what to do next, the two navigate grief through the only language they seem to have: gentle, loving argument. When they consider returning the urn, Charlie pushes back – it doesn’t feel right leaving her behind. Alex, who has already made their peace, eventually relents. As the journey continues, Charlie seems to reach their own quiet acceptance, and in a final, wordless moment of dark humour, makes an impulsive decision about where she’ll end up after all.
